Voices for Creative Aging

Programs & Concerts

Ithaca College will be featuring numerous local, region and national artists during the "Voices for Creative Aging" program.  The emphasis of these performances is to help expose older populations to under-represented music.  The program will also feature local "Enduring Masters" who will perform and reflect on their life and art.

2009

March 29- David Parks and his Jazz group, Purple Banana Jazz, perform easy listening Jazz at Longview. 3pm

February 4 London McDaniels performs at  Lifelong Ithaca Celebration of Black History Month, Reggae, blues, Funk and Folk- Guitar and vocals on original compositions.

2008 performances included:

December 10
BrassRoots playing at Kendal. LJ Neal and Beverly Stokes on trumpet, Liz Teucke on french horn, Allison Neal on trombone, and Tim Orton on tuba. Christmas and holiday tunes,  to include Winter Wonderland, Let it Snow, Jingle Bells, March of the Wooden Soldiers, My Favorite Things and Jingle Bell Rock.

  • Hospicare CD Release Concert, featuring the music of Samite, Jayne Demakos, and IC Faculty

  • Panigma Steel Band - The Pangima Steel Band has been bringing Caribbean music to the Upstate New York area since 2000.  Their high energy performance features traditional and popular songs as well as an interactive presentation about the history of the steel drum.  Please visit Panigma's website for songs, video, and other information about the steel drum.  

 

  • Gene Cothran Trio - Gene Cothran (age 62) on piano, George Reed (age 85) on drums, and Walter Benson on bass perform traditional jazz songs throughout New York State.  The performance also features a brief discussion of the Harlem Renaissance, which members of the trio experienced during the 1920's and 1930's.

 

  • Baruch Whitehead: "Making Music Using the Carl Orff Process" - Professor Baruch Whitehead visited Longview to conduct two seminars on how to make music.  Through familiar songs, residents learned how to play basic harmonies, sing melodies, and add improvisation.

 

  • David Baker Quartet: "A Tribute to Frank Sinatra" - The David Baker Quartet  gave a performance highlighting the hits of Frank Sinatra.  The performance also featured brief commentary about the history of each song and it's importance in Sinatra's career.  Free transportation was provided for over 60 elderly.
